How to live in Boston for less than $1,000.00 a day:

Entertainment - going out on a dime

When I first started my Ph.D. program, the only activities that my classmates organized involved visiting several bars in one night (pub crawling). There was really nothing else to do in Boston - no art, no architecture, no historical sights - the only thing to do was to go drinking. Wait a second, what about all the great museums, interesting buildings, and all the stuff on the Freedom Trail? How could all the brilliant students here miss all the things you can do besides getting drunk?

There are lots of things to do in Boston that don't cost a lot of money:

  • Museums -
  • Architecture -
  • The MFA Film Program -
  • Free movie tickets - if you have to go to a regular movie theater, try to find something to complain about - dirty bathrooms, bad lighting, noisy kids - anything. They will give you free movie tickets. That's because movie theaters don't make any money on ticket sales - all that goes back to the studio. Movie theaters make most of their money on concessions - hence the crazy prices (see this CNN article). Giving you free tickets doesn't cost the theater anything, it just ensures that you'll be back to pay $15 for a bucket of popcorn, a soda, and a box of Red Vines. Maybe you'll see a preview for a movie that you have to catch in theaters, and buy more movie tickets. See, everybody wins!
